Some kids feel threatened or intimidated by the lack of the customary lines and figures that make up kids coloring pages and coloring books. As parent or teacher, you can determine if asking your child to create her own illustrations is putting too much stress on her. You don't want to add stress to children's lives, by forcing them into an uncomfortable situation. However, you can point out to the child that border designs on each page give ideas of what to draw and create. Sometimes just looking at the border design for a few minutes ignites a spark of confidence to draw something and stretch her abilities beyond a simple coloring page. Use your intuition and knowledge of the child who may not want to draw the picture to determine if you can encourage her to draw it or not. Why Illustrating and Coloring Pictures for Kids are ImportantIt has been stated by educators for children that "90 percent of kids are creative at 5 years-old, and only 2 percent of children are still creative by the time they're 8 years-old." (Living Your Life Out Loud by Salli Rasberry and Padi Selwyn, p.3). (I know, I repeated myself from above, but this point is so important, I felt it OK to do so.)If this is true, then it's important that children get as many opportunities to use and increase their creativity as much as possible between 6 - 8 years old. Which just happens to be the age group who most enjoyed Joey's Cabbage Patch when it was first published as a soft cover book. Having creative muscles throughout life gives each of us more options and makes it much easier to "turn lemons into lemonade." People who are creative see solutions when problems arise, and have more options to create a variety of solutions. So, parents who gift their children with opportunities to be creative may see dividends and rewards their entire lives. Our printable coloring page gives your child the chance to deepen her creative thinking skills, develop herself as an artist, and to learn about the environment as well.
